The first Republican majority in the House of Representatives in nearly 40 years has delivered the first balanced budget in nearly 30 years (four years ahead of projections) and the first tax cut in 16 years.
The American economy is booming. Unemployment is at the lowest rate in a generation. Inflation is under control. The stock market is setting new records each month. We are a nation at peace. In many ways, these are the best of times.
During times of propserity, elected officials find themselves agreeing with each other more than bickering. In many ways this is good for America. But, we should not forget there are still many tough choices to make concerning the best policies for America's future that will keep in motion our pro-jobs, pro-business, pro-reform, anti-tax agenda.
Here are the issues that I have been working on and that I intend to help pass into law in the next Congress:
The 13th District has become a battleground as Democrats attempt to regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives. With urban populations shrinking, Democrats feel compelled to target suburban districts like ours in order to gain seats. We won't let this happen!
In 1996, big labor spent nearly $1 million to air maliciously false advertising as part of its campaign to scare senior citizens. My Democrat opponent raised and spent nearly $700,000. I was the only Republican freshman in the Congress to face such a challenge and to win in a district that Bill Clinton carried in 1996. I did so by overcoming a Clinton landslide of nearly 22,000 votes in the 13th District. I am very proud of our victory in 1996.
This 1998 election is about experience and proven performance. It is about which candidate has cast the tough votes for lower taxes, fiscal restraint, and to reform wasteful and ineffective Democrat programs. I am proud of my record of fighting for the issues that matter to my constituents. We have a balanced budget, lower taxes, real welfare reform, and we will have IRS reform very soon!
That is real progress! But we are far from completing our tasks. That is why I must be reelected for the Republicans to retian control of Congress. But we cannot succeed without your continued support.
I hope that you will choose to become an active participant in my re-election campaign by becoming a donor, or a volunteer. Thank you very much for your consideration of my request.
Sincerely yours,
Jon D. Fox
