Trans-Siberian Orchestra, State Theater, Detroit, MI, Dec. 19, 1999:
>From 8 to 80, and from tuxedos and formals to denim and leather, the crowd
for TSO’s first ever tour was as diverse as I’ve ever witnessed. This holiday
show brought out both hardcore rockers and the symphony crowd, with the
amazing fact being, all had a great time and walked away satisfied. Minus
the choirs, TSO delivered a dazzling show composed of the majority of material
from their Christmas Attic and Christmas Eve releases. An
eight piece string section was led by violin virtuoso Mark Wood, while
the members of the band ripped through a host of holiday classics and some
that are destined to be. Al Pitrelli’s axework was phenomenal, and his
talents have never been as apparent as when the band cut into the classical
Christmas cuts. The absence of John Oliva was a disappointment, but his
fill-in on piano did a magnificent job. After an hour and a half of their
seasonal offerings, TSO treated the sold out crowd to a taste of their
forthcoming non-holiday release, Beethoven’s Last Night, with a
ripping encore featuring both Beethoven and Mozart, and if the songs are
any indication, the album is gonna be heavy on the guitars. An outstanding
show that left the crowd breathless. Afterwards the band was quick to hit
the lobby for autograph and photo opportunities. A class act all the way.
