The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recommended and the Congress mandated that the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) conduct training in fatigue awareness. In addition, the Department of Transportation Human Factors Coordinating Council have focused on the subject which has become a major issue throughout the transportation industry.
As a first step toward carrying out its Congressional mandate in February 1998, the FTA Office of Safety and Security sponsored in conjunction with the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), a Fatigue Symposium. This symposium brought together fatigue experts from around the country as well as those in the transit industry who are responsible for fitness-for-duty training. This symposium, Alertness 2000, is a follow-on to the 1998 symposium and will include a more extensive cross-section of fatigue experts and others concerned with fatigue and its effects on transit. Operational and labor issues will be emphasized at this one-and-half-day symposium.
