March Meeting

SUBJECT: "New Jersey Department of Transportation's First Permanent Soil Nailed Highway Retaining Wall"

SPEAKER: John J. Peirce, P.E., Geotechnical Engineer, The Conduit & Foundation Corporation

In slope stabilization projects success may best be ensured by a combination of soil reinforcement with other means of ground modification, such as providing drainage (dewatering) or chemical stabilization. Additional remedial measures may also include altering the geometry and removing or controlling external loading. Soil nailing may provide such a solution.

Soil nailing is designed to intersect potential failure planes and create a new structural entity with improved stability.

This presentation discusses the recent design and construction of New Jersey Department of Transportation's first permanent soil nailed highway retaining wall at future ramp ''A" for Route 80 over the Garden State Parkway, in Elmwood Park, New Jersey.
