The course is designed to provide the participant with an understanding of the operative concepts and techniques of stabilization of the spine according to the principles of the AO/ASIF. Recognizing the several disciplines involved in spinal surgery, this course is spine-specific rather than discipline-specific. Principles of internal fixation will be reviewed as applied to the spine, stressing the biomechanics of the normal and pathologic spine. Indications for surgical stabilization and the concepts involved in the choice of technique will be discussed for a variety of spinal disorders including degenerative, traumatic and latrogenic.

The Basic Spine Course is designed to provide the participant with knowledge of the operative stabilization of the spine according to the AO/ASIF principles. It covers the following techniques: external and internal fixation systems, fixation for use in stabilization of injuries, correction of deformities and treatment of degenerative disease and spondylolisthesis.
The Advanced Spine Course continues instruction in AO/ASIF techniques, with increased emphasis on difficult or rare problems seen by the practicing spine surgeon.
