Highlights from 1997
Educational Events in North America
As noted in Eric Johnson's letter at the beginning of this issue, 1997 was an extremely active year for AO courses and workshops in North America. Illustrated below are just a few highlights from the year's events. AONA extends great gratitude to the numerous AO faculty members who selflessly devoted time away from their practices to teach at these highly successful courses.
Eric Johnson presents Professor Martin Allgöwer with a crystal apple (for the teacher) on the occasion
of Martin's 80th birthday. This event was celebrated at the
faculty dinner during the AO Basic & Advanced Courses in Colorado Springs last May.
Faculty member Dr. John Hardeman reviews the techniques of craniofacial fracture fixation during a
laboratory excercise at the Tampa AO Maxillofacial Course in August.
AO Faculty member Steve Schelkun demonstrates reaming techniques during one of the laboratories
at the AO Resident Course in Reno (January 1997).
Residents present problem cases to the faculty during the "Fireside discussion" portion of the
Charlotte AO Residents Course in June.
Twenty eight AO Operating Room Personal courses were held in North America in 1997.

The annual Veterinary Basic and Advanced AO Courses at Ohio State once again
attracted over 270 veterinary surgeons to Columbus last May. Above, two course participants
practice internal fixation tecniques in the Equine lab.
Dr. J. Talley Parrott assists two course participants during practical
work excercises at the AO ASIF Spine Course in Bermuda in October 1997.
At the Madison AO Resident Course last August, Dr. Paul Apyan demonstrated
the use of AO External Fixation on a large wedge of Wisconsin cheese (just prior to the Greenbay Packers Pre-season game attended by all faculty).
During the Colorado Springs course, Joe Schatzker instructs at the Dynamic hip screw
laboratory. Joe has been teaching at AO courses continuously since 1969.
These two participants at the Tampa AO Maxillofacial ORP Course were
judged to have demonstrated the "best fixation" of mandible/craniofacial fractures.
