AO ASIF Distraction Osteogenesis Course

Course Description:

The course is intended to provide a forum through which attendees may gain a clear understanding of the principles of distraction osteogenesis as applied in the craniomaxillofacial skeleton according to AO ASIF principles and techniques.

Participants will hear the latest basic science research related to distraction osteogenesis with emphasis on preoperative considerations, treatment planning, surgical technique, and postoperative therapy. Lectures will discuss methods of managing craniofacial and orthognathic indications with distraction osteogenesis.

A hands-on workshop will be held where participants will utilize treatment planning tools and apply distraction and post-distraction management principles discussed previous lectures.

The course is open to attending physicians and residents in Oral and Maxillofacial, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Orthodontics.

Topics:

  • Basic science - the latest findings in craniomaxillofacial distraction
  • Managing mandibular hypoplasia with distraction osteogenesis
  • Advancement of the midface using distraction osteogenesis
  • Cranial vault expansion with distraction osteogenesis
  • Treating airway obstructions with distraction osteogenesis
  • The role of orthodontics in distraction procedures - pre and postoperative
  • Conventional orthognathic surgery and distraction osteogenesis
  • Mandibular widening and alveolar ridge augmentation with distraction
  • Principles of treatment planning and the appropriate tools

    Practial Exercises:

  • Treatment planning
  • Single vector distraction hands-on lab

    Course Objectives:

The objectives of this Course are to:

    1. Enable the participant to acquire a basic knowledge of the principles of distraction osteogenesis as they relate to the craniomaxillofacial skeleton.

    2. Provide the participant with an understanding of the latest basic science research including recent findings on the differences between distraction in the craniomaxillofacial skeleton and in long bones.

    3. Expose the participant to the principles of treatment planning, and imaging tools utilize for planning distraction cases.

    4. Provide an understanding of ways to manage a multitude of indications with distraction osteogenesis.

    5. Provide the participant with an understanding of when to manage indications with distraction osteogenesis, and when not to manage with distraction osteogenesis.

    6. Enable the participant to practice the application of treatment planning, surgical technique, and postdistraction outcome management through a hands-on lab.

    7. Educate the participant in the role of orthodontics in achieving an optimal outcome in distraction osteogenesis.
