AO ASIF Maxillofacial Course

The program of this course includes all possibilities for stable internal fixation in traumatology of the mandible and the midface and ablative tumor surgery including reconstruction and orthognathic surgery. It will also include a review of the biomechanics of the mandible and midface, as well as histology of fracture healing. The latest research developments in bone formation, bone lengthening and bioresorbables will also be addressed. Besides formal lectures and case presentations, practical exercises and "fireside" discussions will be included. The course objective is to teach various reliable techniques of internal fixation, as well as the advantages associated with each approach. Special emphasis is put on a dialogue between participants and faculty. Lectures will be given by distinguished international faculty.

Enrollment is open to attending surgeons in Oral and Maxillofacial, Otolaryngology Head and Neck, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Please bring x-rays and/or slides of problem cases for the group discussions, and be willing to actively participate.

Long Island Jewish Medical Center designates this CME activity for a maximum of 30 credit hours.

OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this Course, the participant should be able to:

1. Understand the principles of stable internal fixation as outlined by AO ASIF;

2. Apply the fundamentals of fracture healing to maxillofacial surgery, including biomechanics and histology;

3, Apply each maxillofacial surgical technique;

4. Incorporate patient selection and preoperative planning considerations with treatment techniques used in maxillofacial surgery;

5. Discern the resolution of complications and intraoperative difficulties related to maxillofacial surgery;

6. Apply current concepts of polytrauma care as they relate to maxillofacial surgery.
